The Creation of Gems
Since ancient times there is a quest of man that what are gems, what are their origin and what are their effects on a human body. There are many stories and references in our Rigveda to Puran and Samhintas. In modern age many schools also write on this subject. There are two beliefs one is according to ancient Hinduism books and the second is modern scientific. We consider both of these.

The Mythological View Of the Creation of Gems
As Bhagwan Shankar is called the origin of Rudraksha, there are some stories about the evolution of gems.

The Story of Daitya Raj Bali
In the very olden days Bali was a brave and mighty king. He conquered the all world. After this, he defeated the Indra. The king of gods, but after all this he was a very donator.

After the defeat of gods, all the gods together with Indra went to Vishnu and prayed for safety. Vishnu went to Bali as a dwarf Brahman and beg only three and step of earth as a donation.

Proud Bali failed to identify Vishnu and gave the words. Vishnu made himself enormous and took all the three loks in three steps but the half-step was remained Vishnu stepped down that half step on the chest of Bali.The whole body of Bali converted in gems after the touching of feet of Lord Vishnu. After this Indra hurt his Vajra on him and broke his body in pieces. It is said that the gems are created by these pieces of king Bali.

Lord Shiv Shankar hold these gems and jewels on his trishul and gave the different divine powers of planets and rashes in these and then scattered around the earth. In this way, the mines of gems created.


The Different gems are originated by the different body-parts of King Bali as diamond from head, pearl from heart and emerald from liver.

There are some other stories also in ancient books, but we have not to go in details.

The Scientific View of Gems
There are two categories of gems. First from mines called mineral gems as- diamond, sapphire, emerald, ruby etc. The second which are created by insects in sea and are called sea-gems. These are coral and pearl.

There are many chemicals materials in earth. After a long & regular chain of chemical reaction it converts in the form of gems. The main elements of gems are- Carbon, Berallium, Calcium, Aluminium, Phosphorous, Manganese etc.

Gems : Common Introduction
A particular gem is made of different quality and quantity of chemical elements and so the different gems are of different colour, size and hardness.

According to the ancient books the gems and semi gems are eighty four in total, but there are some semi gems also classified. Some of the semi-gems not available now and some are rare, some are not used in the ornaments and not valueable in view of astrology also, but we are giving the details of all.

Only nine gems are named Nav- Ratna nine gems. These are- Ruby, Pearl, Coral, Emerald, Topaz, diamond, Blue Sapphire, Zircon and cast Eye. In these nine gems five are called- Maharatna means the great gems- Ruby, Pearl, Coral, Emerald, Topaz, diamond, Blue Sapphire, Zircon and cast Eye. and are called only gems.
